Today I found my lungs! Since June I have been working on my base. I wanted to go slow and easy and peak during cross season. So far, everything is working out as planned. I started this base training back in June. Ya, I know that is a long time but like I said I have a plan.
The last three days of riding have opened my lungs. Saturdays ride was a 2 hour jaunt around with a few 1 min blasts on the gravel hills (no snakes this time). Yesterdays 50 mile cyclocross ride that lasted 5 hour and had us climbing to a total of 4200 feet was great for getting the legs cleared out.
Today I hit Buffalo Creek for 4 hours. Started the ride with a really nice climb out of Pine Valley. Needed it because it was 40 degrees and I had no jacket. Overall the ride was RAD, but it was really "sandy" more like ball bearing so I had to focus on positioning and power distribution. Once to the top it is a bunch of rollers and power climbs. As the ride went on I hit every climb with a little more power. By mid ride I was all out attacking everything. It reminded me of the old days (about 4 years ago).
The best part was my breathing. It was there! No whimpering, no pain, just deep breathing.
Cross season starts soon. Saturday there is a race but the real racing starts in 3 weeks. I cant wait to see how the legs, lungs, and pain shake out. HTFU!!
